Synopsis
A tale of two men who lived through the war that no one could escape and the chaos that swept over everyone
In 1592, King Seonjo flees the capital, away from the advancing Japanese army. Behind him, the palace burns in flames, blazing with his people’s fury.
Cheon-yeong has struggled all his life to escape from servitude. He draws his sword, hoping to break free from servitude in return for his exceptional service to the country.
Jong-ryeo, despite being the only son of the most prestigious military family in Joseon, struggles to hone his swordsmanship. He shares friendship with Cheon-yeong and when Cheon-yeong passes the military qualifying exam on his behalf, Jong-ryeo tries to convince his father to release Cheon-yeong from servitude in return. However, Jong-ryeo fails and ends up deeply enraging Cheon-yeong.
When the war with Japan breaks out, Cheon-yeong runs away and joins the righteous army in the midst of chaos, while Jong-ryeo mistakenly believes that it was Cheon-yeong who killed his family during his escape.
After seven brutal years of war, Cheon-yeong has clawed his way up to the top of the righteous army with unparalleled military prowess, while Jong-ryeo makes his return to the capital, Hanyang, seeking revenge for his family.
In devastated Joseon, two men — one siding with the people and the other with the royalty — now hold their swords against each other.
