Netflix ISP Speed Index for March 2017

Here are some highlights from the March data for the Netflix ISP Speed Index, our monthly update on which Internet Service Providers (ISPs) provide the best prime-time Netflix streaming experience.

Spain’s R experienced a speed increase of 0.57 Megabits per second (Mbps) in March, the biggest increase on the index this month, increasing its speed to 3.63 Mbps, up from 3.06 Mbps in February. Speed gains also helped Vodafone rise three spots to No. 2 and Euskaltel rise three spots to No. 3.

Japan dropped seven spots to 24th in our country rankings. Japan’s BIGLOBE experienced the largest decline on this month’s index, decreasing its average monthly speed to 2.87 Mbps, down from 3.29 Mbps in February. Also contributing to the drop in our country rankings were slowing speeds at Tokai Communications and IIJ. Tokai Communications dropped four spots to No. 10 while IIJ dropped four spots to No. 13 in Japan.

Taiwan Broadband continued its gains this month with an increase of 0.42 Mbps, increasing its average monthly speed to 2.75 Mbps, up from 2.33 Mbps in February.

Another notable gain happened in the Philippines, where SKYCable rose two spots to No. 2 by improving its speed average to 2.51 Mbps, up from 2.19 Mbps last month. India’s Syscon Infoway also rose two spots as its speeds climbed by 0.3 Mbps, reaching a 1.8 Mbps monthly average for March.

In Guatemala, Tigo Star’s speed increased by 0.25 Mbps, raising its monthly average to 2.45 Mbps, up from 2.2 Mbps in February. Ecuador’s TVCable saw its speeds slow to 2.51 Mbps in March, down from 2.75 Mbps in the prior month.

We saw movement in our country rankings as Ireland rose five spots to 17th in our country rankings and Canada rose three spots to 21st.

The Netflix ISP Speed Index is a measure of prime time Netflix performance on a particular ISP and not a measure of overall performance for other services/data that may travel across the specific ISP network. Faster Netflix performance generally means better picture quality, quicker start times and fewer interruptions.
