Only one service made gains on January’s Netflix ISP Speed Index, our monthly update on which Internet Service Providers (ISPs) provide the best prime time Netflix streaming experience.

The first report of 2020 saw an increase with Taiwan’s Taiwan Mobile, which jumped 0.39 Megabits per second (Mbps) to an average of 2.56 Mbps.

However, while there was just one notable increase, there were several services that posted large losses.

In Indonesia, three different services saw declines. Biznet fell 0.41 Mbps to a 3.27 Mbps average, GlobalXtreme dropped 0.35 Mbps to an average of 3.12 Mbps, and Indosat-Fibre dipped 0.3 Mbps to a 3.58 Mbps average.

There were two decreases in Romania: Next Gen dropped 0.45 Mbps to an average of 4.14 Mbps, while Telekom fell 0.34 Mbps to a 3.68 Mbps average.

Hungary’s invitel saw the single biggest drop of any service, falling 0.49 Mbps to an average of 3.21 Mbps. In nearby Austria, A1 dropped 0.4 Mbps to a 2.93 Mbps average. Elsewhere, India’s MTNL dipped 0.32 Mbps to an average of 2.24 Mbps.

In the middle east, Saudi Arabia’s ITC and Turkey’s Turkcell Superonline fell 0.42 Mbps to a 3.51 Mbps average, and 0.36 Mbps to a 3.38 Mbps average, respectively.

On the country rankings list, two countries rebounded after taking notable tumbles in December. After falling seven spots last month, Hong Kong jumped five spots from 15 to 10. After dropping four spots last month, Kuwait rose four spots from 41 to 37.  Malaysia posted the biggest increase, jumping eight spots from 34 to 26.

The Netflix ISP Speed Index is a measure of primetime Netflix performance on a particular ISP and not a measure of overall performance for other services/data that may travel across the specific ISP network. Faster Netflix performance generally means better picture quality, quicker start times and fewer interruptions.
